Field App Help Page

A free, GPS-enabled app for collecting consistent field data on culverts, weirs, and other in-stream structures — helping identify fish passage barriers, guide remediation efforts, and support long-term waterway management.

1. What devices can I use the app on?

The app runs on the CyberTracker platform, which is compatible with most Android and iOS smartphones or tablets. However, the Field App project works best on Android, as some features may be limited or unavailable on iOS.

2. Do I need internet access to use the app in the field?

No. Once installed, the app works offline. All data is saved locally and can be uploaded once you return to a location with internet or Wi-Fi access.

3. How do I install the Structures in Waterways project onto CyberTracker?

After downloading CyberTracker:

  1. Open the app

  2. Tap Connect

  3. Choose Web Install

  4. Enter the project URL: https://bit.ly/atsct

  5. Tap Install

This will load the Structures in Waterways survey options into your app.

4. What’s the difference between the Full, Quick, and Monitoring surveys?
  • Quick Survey: Fast assessments for when time or access is limited

  • Full Survey: A detailed structure assessment, including barrier info and measurements

  • Monitoring Survey: For rechecking or tracking changes to already surveyed sites

5. How do I make sure my data has uploaded properly?

When you have internet access, CyberTracker will upload your saved surveys automatically (or when prompted). You can confirm by checking the ‘Upload’ screen in the app. If issues persist, check your Wi-Fi settings or contact support.

6. Why isn’t the GPS recording my location?

Ensure your phone’s location services are turned on and that CyberTracker has permission to access location. Poor signal areas may delay GPS fix — wait a moment in open space before retrying.

7. Can I edit a survey after submitting it?

No — once submitted, surveys can’t be edited in the app. If you made an error, it’s best to resubmit a corrected survey and clearly note the duplicate or correction in the comments field.

8. How do I know what barrier status a structure gets?

The app automatically assigns a status code based on your survey responses. These codes help classify whether a structure is a potential barrier, a confirmed barrier, has been remediated, or needs maintenance.

9. I’m part of a council or group — can we export and use the data ourselves?

Yes. Survey data can be exported and used in your own mapping or reporting tools. ATS Environmental also offers support with data cleaning, formatting, GIS mapping, and remediation planning.

10. Can the app be used for structures outside of New Zealand?

Yes — while the app was designed with New Zealand’s waterway conditions in mind, it can be used anywhere. However, keep in mind that some status logic and recommendations are tailored to NZ species and guidelines.

11. Do I need training to use the app?

No formal training is required — the app is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly. That said, a short walkthrough or team briefing is recommended, especially for larger projects. ATS Environmental can assist with training and onboarding if needed.
